The despair deepens
I had to quarantine alone in a dorm room for two weeks. I couldn't even go outside or see my friends.
Substance misuse, depression, overdose, and suicide skyrocketed during the pandemic. COVID-19 threw our kids’ academic schedules, social lives, and extracurricular activities into chaos; everything they looked forward to was postponed or canceled. There’s nothing more dangerous than a teen who feels isolated, and it’s essential to get kids talking and create a safe space where they can share their concerns.
When the pandemic hit, Generation S.O.S. did not miss a beat. We shifted immediately to twice-monthly Zoom meetings led by our youth advisory board members featuring an incredibly compelling young, sober speaker. The virus intensified teens’ and young adults’ feelings of isolation, fear, uncertainty, and loss of community. Our Zoom sessions now address Covid-19, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and bullying.
We are deeply committed to taking the hope, optimism, and peer support of Generation S.O.S. nationwide so that youth everywhere can become a part of our community.
